Knowledge Insights:
Dwayne Morgan began his career as a spoken word artist in 1993, and has since traveled throughout the world sharing his work. He is the founder of Up From The Roots entertainment, which was established in 1994 to promote the positive artistic contributions of African Canadian and urban influenced artists. Dwayne published his first book of poetry, Long Overdue, in 1999. The Making of a Man is his third poetry anthology. Dwayne’s work ethic and emphasis on quality has driven his success, and has made him a well respected component of Toronto’s urban music community, as well as the North American spoken word scene.

Knowledge Staff Review:
The Making of a Man by spoken word performer Dwayne Morgan never fails to grip the imagination and stir the spirit. In this anthology, he comments on love, poverty, identity, violence and maturity. Offering readers more insight into the experiences that have made Morgan the man that he is, he continues to bring issues to the forefront that others shy away from.

Morgan possesses a poet's gift for language and observation, this work is imbued with a passion that literally shines through the pages. He speaks about a lot of historical and cultural realities, things that Africans should always be conscious of such as, slavery, self-hate, community building, and discrimination, “God blesses the child who’s got his own, Protects his home, And respects his community… Recognizing that I am here standing on my ancestor’s shoulders…” Morgan also talks about striving from our past, encouraging us to go even farther, working harder, and becoming more, “This poem will only scratch the surface, You’ve got to know what your worth is, And define your life’s purpose…”

The most impressive aspect of The Making of a Man is its painful honesty. Morgan bares his soul for the readers’ inspiration and growth, “I am that Black man. Who is a work in progress… Because I am never too old to grow…”
